Huh, that's odd. Three AM humming? Sounds like something straight out of a ghost story. I've stayed in plenty of places in @Beijing – never heard anything quite like that though. Could be anything from old pipes to, I dunno, some kind of weird electrical thing? Maybe someone’s got a seriously powerful subwoofer in their room? It's @Beijing, anything's possible, really. Worth mentioning to the hotel staff next time you’re there, though. They might have some insight.

It's pretty impressive, that's for sure. I went a few years back and it was surprisingly...calm. Not hushed exactly, but definitely not bustling. Lots of space to wander, though I wouldn't say everything is open to the public. There are definitely areas roped off, but enough to get a good feel for the size and grandeur. You'll get some amazing shots. Think less hushed library, more...monumental museum on a quiet afternoon. Enjoy!
