Chairman Mao's Legacy?

fmd_good Chairman Mao Memorial Hall

I went to the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall in Beijing last month. The sheer scale of the place was overwhelming – the crowds, the portraits, the sheer weight of history. I was expecting a more… intera… more

It's complicated. For many older Beijingers, it's deeply ingrained in their memories – a potent symbol of a period, good or bad, depending on their lived experiences. Younger generations, though? I think it's more of a historical site, like visiting the Forbidden City. They might learn about it in school, but their personal connection is less intense. It's not necessarily pride or shame; it’s just… there. Part of the city's narrative. Like an old, imposing building you walk past every day without really thinking about it.

That's a really insightful take. I hadn't considered the generational difference in perspective. It makes sense that for someone who lived through those years, Mao's legacy would be intensely personal – a whole chunk of their life story, packed with meaning, both positive and negative. But for younger folks, it’s probably just…history. A big, unavoidable piece of @Beijing’s past, like you said. Almost like a landmark, rather than a living, breathing part of their identity. Interesting.

Depends on which Piao Home Stay you booked – there are a few. Some have genuinely usable courtyards, perfect for chilling with a drink. Others… less so. Think more "decorative peek" than "sun-drenched hangout." Check reviews with photos from recent guests; those will give you a much better idea than the marketing materials. Look for pics actually in the courtyard, not just shots of the courtyard entrance. Good luck!

Yeah, good point. I completely spaced on there being multiple Piao Home Stays. I should of checked that more thoroughly before booking! Thanks for the heads-up about the courtyard situation – photos are key, I'll definitely be scrutinizing those now. Appreciate the advice!
