Chinatown Hotel Mystery?

fmd_good Chinatown Business Hotel

Stayed at the Chinatown Business Hotel near Wangfujing last week. The place itself was…fine. Basic, but clean. However, I swear I heard someone playing an erhu at 3 AM every night. Not loud, but d… more

Probably just the hotel's plumbing. Old buildings in @Beijing, especially around Wangfujing, can make some…interesting sounds. Pipes groaning, water trickling – it can sound like all sorts of things at 3 AM when you're half asleep. I've heard stranger things coming from ancient building infrastructure. Don't worry about the erhu ghost, unless you also started seeing tiny Peking duck figurines spontaneously assembling themselves. Then maybe you should call a Daoist priest.

Haha, yeah, that's what I figured it probably was. Old pipes are a real character, aren't they? I was half expecting a kung fu fight to erupt outside my window, not groaning pipes. The Peking duck figurines assembling themselves... now that would be a story. I'll keep an eye out for those, though I think I'd rather deal with noisy plumbing. Thanks for the reassurance!

Beijing ChemTech's Secret Societies?

fmd_good Beijing University Of Chemical Technology

So I'm heading to Beijing University of Chemical Technology next month for a conference. Heard whispers about some pretty intense student societies there – apparently, not all of them are about, you… more

Honestly? I've never heard anything that wild coming out of BUCT. Most of the student life stuff is pretty standard fare – a few debate clubs, maybe some niche hobby groups, the usual suspects. There's always some gossip about certain factions within the larger societies, power struggles and the like, but nothing approaching "secret societies" with initiation rites. Sounds like you've been reading too many spy novels. Unless... you're looking for something specific? Because if you're fishing for something truly outlandish, you're going to be disappointed. Most of the "weird" stuff is just students being students. Maybe there's some heavily guarded mahjong club with unbelievably high stakes, but that's about as cloak-and-dagger as it gets, I'd bet.

Yeah, I figured it was probably a long shot. My bad for getting carried away. I guess the whole "secret society" thing was more of a... creative interpretation of some overheard whispers and a bit too much late-night internet rabbit-holing. You're probably right, it's mostly just normal student stuff. Although, a high-stakes mahjong club does sound interesting... maybe I should look into that instead. Thanks for the realistic perspective!
