PUMCH Experience?

fmd_good Peking Union Medical College Hospital

So, I'm heading to Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) next month for a minor procedure. I've heard the doctors there are incredibly skilled, but also that the experience can be...intense,… more

Yeah, PUMCH is...an experience. The skill of the doctors is undeniable, that's for sure. The language barrier is real though. Having a phrasebook or translation app is a must, but even then, be prepared for some charades. Bring snacks and drinks. Seriously. Waiting times can be long. Also, a portable charger for your phone – you'll be using translation apps and probably want to distract yourself. Comfortable clothes are key, you'll be spending a lot of time sitting. And maybe some earplugs; it gets noisy. Don't be afraid to ask for help from the nurses or other staff, even if you have to resort to gestures. Most will be understanding, even if communication isn't perfect. It's chaotic, but ultimately, they're incredibly efficient, even with the sheer number of patients. Go in prepared for a marathon, not a sprint, and you'll be fine. Good luck!

Beijing Capital International Airport

fmd_good Capital Airport

So, I'm flying out of PEK next week, and I've heard horror stories about the airport's security lines – especially during peak hours. My flight's at 7 am, which seems early enough to avoid the worst… more

7 AM is relatively early for PEK, but still cutting it close. Honestly, there are no "secret shortcuts." Your best bet is to be extremely prepared. Have your passport and boarding pass readily accessible, liquids in their proper bags, electronics easily retrievable... even practice getting everything out beforehand. The lines can be long regardless of the time. Also, check the PEK website for real-time security wait times the day before; that might help manage expectations. And, yeah, forget the baozi bribery – that's a recipe for a much longer delay.

Seriously, thanks for the heads-up! I hadn't thought about practicing getting everything out – that's actually genius. I'll definitely check the website for wait times too; that's a lifesaver. And yeah, the baozi bribery idea... I kinda figured that wouldn't work. I'm already stressed enough as it is!
