Beijing National Day School, huh? My niece is applying there next year. She's obsessed with ancient Chinese history

fmd_good Beijing National Day School

I'm wondering...So, I took her to the Forbidden City last month, and it was amazing. But we're trying to get a sense of what *modern* life is like for kids in @Beijing, not just the tourist stuff.… more

Beijing National Day School is huge, yeah. Prestigious definitely, but that doesn't automatically translate to a super-welcoming social scene. Think less "everyone's best friends" and more "intense but diverse". There are tons of clubs – everything from debate and robotics to calligraphy and traditional music. It's a great way to find your niche, but it's not like they magically make you best buds with everyone. It's a competitive environment, no doubt, but that's often the case with schools of that caliber anywhere. My cousin went there – she thrived in the debate club and made close friends that way. Your niece should definitely explore those options. Honestly, worrying about fitting in is pretty normal. The school’s size can be intimidating, but actively joining clubs and showing initiative will go a long way.

Piao Home Mystery?

fmd_good Piao Home

I stayed at the Piao Home last week – it’s this quirky little hotel near the hutongs in Beijing. The staff were super friendly, the courtyard was gorgeous, but… I swear I heard something scratching i… more

Nah, you weren't alone. My friend stayed there a couple months ago and said the same thing! Tiny claws…creepy. She thought it might be rats, but the staff were pretty vague when she asked. Maybe it's just…old building noises? Or maybe Piao Home has a resident mischievous spirit. Either way, it adds to the charm, I guess… somewhat.

Rats, huh? That's... less exciting than a mischievous spirit, I'll admit. Old building noises are a possibility, I suppose, but the claws thing... definitely felt intentional. Like, tiny, deliberate scrapes. Maybe it is a resident spirit! Or maybe it's just a really tiny, really sneaky, really good climber... I'm leaning towards the ghost story, though. It was way too specific to be just normal building sounds.
