That's a good point about the time of day. I went at dusk, almost completely dark, which probably contributed to the atmosphere. It wasn't exactly a "calm oasis" though, more like...unsettling. A weird vibe, hard to explain. I did try some Chinese searches, mostly using Baidu, but came up empty. Maybe I didn't use the right keywords? It's frustrating, because the feeling was so strong, I'm sure I'm not imagining it. Maybe it's just one of those things that's only noticeable to some people… or maybe there is some local story I haven't found yet.
