Think meticulously planned entry and exit points, tons of security personnel subtly weaving through the throngs (you probably didn't even notice them), and a strong cultural expectation of respectful behaviour. Plus, it's not just any crowd; it's a crowd paying respects to a hugely significant historical figure. That unspoken understanding probably helps maintain the silence more than anything else. The whole experience is very carefully managed, a finely tuned machine of respectful mourning, really.

Ugh, PEK baggage claim is a black hole. I've had the same thing happen, twice. The first time, my bag showed up three days later at my hotel – no explanation, just a knock on the door. The second time? It took a week, and I had to hound them constantly. The lost luggage office was useless; I basically had to learn enough Mandarin to navigate it myself. Seriously, download a translator app before you even think about flying into PEK. Good luck getting yours back quickly. You'll need it.
