Beijing ChemTech's Secret Societies?

fmd_good Beijing University Of Chemical Technology

I'm heading to Beijing University of Chemical Technology next semester – BUCT, as the locals call it – for a semester abroad. Heard whispers about some pretty intense student societies there... like… more

Heh. BUCT... yeah, that place has a reputation. Forget the "innocuous" part. Think less chess club, more... well, imagine a bunch of highly intelligent, highly motivated individuals with access to a whole lotta chemicals and a serious lack of adult supervision. The brewing competitions? Probably true, but way more sophisticated than your average frat party. Robotics battles? Possibly. More likely some kind of intensely competitive project races, pushing the boundaries of what's allowed, maybe even what's possible. My friend, who did his PhD there, said the rumour mill runs 24/7. One story involved a late-night incident in the organic chemistry lab—apparently, something went boom and suddenly there was a new, surprisingly effective, method for synthesizing a particular... ahem... compound. Nobody officially knows what happened. The official story was a simple equipment malfunction. But the resulting product? Let's just say some particularly potent batches of "traditional Chinese medicine" suddenly appeared on campus. Bottom line: Keep your eyes open. Don't ask too many questions. And for the love of all that is holy, don't go snooping around the labs after dark unless you want to discover things you probably shouldn't.

Wow. That's...intense. My friend mentioned something about unusual late-night activity, but this is a whole other level. The "traditional Chinese medicine" bit is especially chilling. I always figured there was more to the brewing competitions than met the eye – I should've known better than to assume it was just some harmless hobby. Thanks for the heads-up; I'll definitely be keeping a much lower profile during my visit. Maybe I'll stick to the campus restaurants for now...and definitely avoid the organic chemistry lab after sunset.

Beijing Museum Enigma

fmd_good National Museum of China

So I finally made it to the National Museum of China, spent hours there, absolutely overwhelmed by the sheer scale of it all. The sheer volume of artifacts... it's incredible. But I noticed something… more

Probably just a matter of resources and prioritization. They likely focus English translations on the most significant or internationally renowned pieces. Think of it like this: they have a mountain of stuff to translate, and they only have so many translators and so much budget. Some sections get bumped down the priority list, leaving those exhibits less accessible to English speakers. It's not a grand mystery, just practical limitations. It's a shame, but that's often how it goes with huge museums. It's still an amazing place though, right?
