Beijing National Day School: Teacher's Pets?

fmd_good Beijing National Day School

So I'm heading to Beijing next month, super stoked! My cousin went to Beijing National Day School – apparently, it’s a pretty prestigious place. She always talked about how intense the competition… more

It's definitely competitive, that's for sure. My friend's kid went there – straight-A student, super driven, but even she felt the pressure. Think less "community" and more "organized striving." Lots of extracurriculars, though, which can be a good outlet. It's not all cutthroat; there are friendships, but it's a highly pressurized environment. Think Olympic-level pressure, but for academics. Your exchange program idea sounds interesting, but managing expectations – both for your students and the Beijing National Day School students – will be key. Prepare them for a very different academic landscape.

Wow, Olympic-level pressure is a pretty apt description! That's... intense. My concern wasn't just about academics, though. I was also wondering about the social side of things – how well students integrate, if there's a sense of belonging beyond just the academic achievements. Your friend's kid's experience highlights that it's a pretty singular focus. The exchange program is still on the table, but you're right, managing expectations is going to be crucial. We'll definitely need to prep our students for that kind of environment, perhaps even do some kind of cultural sensitivity training beforehand. Thanks for the insight!

Beijing Greens: A Fairytale or a Nightmare?

fmd_good Tianzhu Country Club Golf Course

I'm heading to Tianzhu Country Club Golf Course next month – heard it's stunning, supposedly designed by some famous dude. But my golfing skills are, uh, let's just say "enthusiastically amateur."… more

Tianzhu Country Club? Yeah, it's pretty. Stunning, even. But… that "famous dude" designed a course for pros, not enthusiastic amateurs. Honestly, expect a challenge. If your shots are… enthusiastically amateur… you'll probably spend more time looking for your ball than playing golf. It's not impossible to finish a round without total humiliation, but manage your expectations. Bring extra balls. Lots and lots of extra balls. And maybe a good sense of humor. You'll need it.
