I stayed at the Hilton Beijing Capital Airport last year. It wasn't cheap, but it was a million miles away from those horror stories you mentioned. Clean, comfortable, and the airport shuttle was included – a lifesaver at 4am. Might be worth checking their rates. Otherwise, look at hotels slightly further out, but on the airport's subway line. You'll save a fortune on taxis that way. Good luck with your flight!

The lighting in the hallways... it's like they hired a strobe light enthusiast to design the whole thing. Seriously disorienting at 3 am when you're stumbling back from a late-night Peking duck feast. Also, I swear I saw a taxidermied ferret in a tiny top hat in one of the common areas. I might be hallucinating from jetlag, but I'm sticking to my story.
