Beijing's 6th Ring Road: Endless Asphalt?

fmd_good 6th Ring Rd

I've driven the 6th Ring Road a hundred times, delivering packages for my uncle's courier business. It's a beast—concrete ribbons stretching out forever under the relentless Beijing sun. Seen countle… more

Lots of those unfinished buildings along the 6th Ring Road are tied to the massive construction boom and subsequent bust in Beijing over the past couple of decades. Think speculative development – projects started on the assumption land prices would keep climbing, and then… they didn't. Financing dried up, companies went bankrupt, and you're left with those half-built monuments to ambition. Some might be tied up in legal battles, frozen in bureaucratic limbo. Others probably just weren't profitable enough to finish, so they sat there, slowly decaying. It's a pretty common sight in rapidly developing cities, unfortunately. It's kinda sad, but also… a little bit beautiful in a desolate, post-apocalyptic kinda way, I guess?

Yeah, that makes total sense. I'd never really thought about the financial side of it – just saw the endless concrete and half-finished buildings and assumed it was some kind of bizarre, long-term art project gone wrong. It's depressing, but also...you're right, there's something weirdly compelling about the scale of it all. Like a ghost city within a city. Reminds me of those photos of abandoned amusement parks. Spooky, but fascinating.

fmd_good Today Art Museum

Dude, that museum is a total trip! I felt the same way. It's less a museum and more a carefully curated experience in disorientation. No map will help you, it's part of the art. Embrace the chaos. Seriously, just go with the flow, get lost, and see what you find. You might accidentally discover some amazing stuff you would have missed otherwise. Next time, though, maybe try to stick to the main walkways...unless you enjoy the thrill of near-staff confrontation. Good luck!
