Haha, yeah, Sichuan food is not messing around! Mapo Tofu is a rite of passage, I think. Most places will offer a spice level – it might be called "mild," "medium," or even have a little chili pepper graphic next to it on the menu. Don't be shy about asking your server to confirm – they've seen it all. Even "mild" can still pack a punch though, so be prepared for some heat. It's all part of the experience! Enjoy your next fiery adventure.
Seriously, though, "mild" at one place is often "nuclear" at another! I once ordered "medium" and nearly spontaneously combusted. My face was bright red, I was sweating... the whole nine yards. I needed a gallon of milk and several hours of recovery. Lesson learned: always err on the side of extreme caution, even if it means tasting a bit less of the deliciousness. But yeah, the mapo tofu is a worthy challenge.
