That's a really helpful response, thanks! I hadn't thought about looking at local history books or forums in @Beijing. Military maps online sounds like a long shot, but worth a try I guess. I'll definitely let you know if I uncover anything juicy – secretive military bases are my weakness, haha! Fingers crossed I find something beyond "quiet" and "farmland"!
