That's incredibly helpful, thank you! Beijing archives sounds like a much better lead than endlessly trawling through generic travel blogs. I hadn't even considered the possibility of guard quarters or storage in those smaller towers – that completely changes my perspective. Makes a lot of sense, actually. The misdirection idea is pretty cool too; it's amazing how easily you can miss the practical stuff when focusing on the big picture. I'll definitely look into those university libraries. Fingers crossed I find something juicy! I'll be sure to post an update if I stumble on anything interesting...or completely baffling!
