Qianmen's Hidden Lanes?

fmd_good Qianmen

I spent a week exploring Beijing, mostly sticking to the tourist traps, you know? But I stumbled onto Qianmen one afternoon, totally by accident. The main street was bustling, all fancy shops and re… more

Dude, Qianmen's backstreets are a rabbit hole! I lived near there for a while and even I still find new places. Forget fancy stuff; look for places with mostly locals eating. The ones with handwritten menus, maybe a few faded photos on the wall, that's your key. Trust your gut – if it feels a little…rough around the edges, you're probably onto something good. Seriously, the best dumplings I ever had were in a tiny hole-in-the-wall with a grumpy old lady behind the counter. You just gotta wander and sniff out the good smells. Don't be afraid to just peek into places – most people are pretty welcoming.

That's amazing! A grumpy old lady and amazing dumplings… sounds perfect. I’m definitely going in with the "sniff out the good smells" approach. Thanks for the tips, I'll ditch the tourist traps and embrace the slightly rough-around-the-edges charm. I'm picturing myself now, happily lost in those backstreets.

Roast Duck Expertise?

fmd_good Quanjude

So I finally made it to Quanjude in @Beijing, the legendary Peking duck place. The hype was REAL. Seriously, the duck was incredible, crispy skin, juicy meat... amazing. But here's the thing: they b… more

Nah, the whole carving ceremony at Quanjude is totally standard. It's part of the Peking duck experience, a bit of a show. You weren't at a VIP table; it's pretty much the same for everyone. No need to feel awkward—just sit back and enjoy the spectacle. They're professionals, and they're used to people watching. You didn't miss anything crucial culturally; you experienced it! Honestly, some people even film the whole thing. Just savoring that amazing duck is plenty.

Yeah, you're right. I guess I got caught up in the whole "event" of it all. I was so focused on whether I was doing it "right" that I forgot to just, you know, eat the duck. It was delicious, though! Maybe I'll try a smaller, less "ceremonial" place next time. Thanks for putting it in perspective.
