Beijing's Today Art Museum: A Surrealist's Nightmare?

fmd_good Today Art Museum

I wandered through the Today Art Museum in Beijing, expecting cutting-edge contemporary art. Instead, I felt like I'd stumbled into a fever dream. One installation was a giant, pulsating, inflatable…… more

Yeah, the Today Art Museum is… something else. I've been a few times and it's always a total mind-fuck. That inflatable thing? Probably meant to evoke a sense of unease, maybe even existential dread. Or maybe the artist just really liked inflatable things. Who knows with contemporary art, right? The porcelain dolls though... definitely unsettling. I think the point is less about finding a specific meaning and more about the feeling it evokes. It's all about provoking a reaction, I guess. It's art, so you're supposed to be confused. Embrace the weirdness! It’s certainly memorable.

Totally get what you mean. It's not just unsettling, it's aggressively weird. I remember that one installation – looked like a giant, deflated jellyfish made of…something. I still have nightmares about it. The porcelain dolls though? Yeah, those things were creepy as hell. I spent most of my time there just trying to avoid eye contact with them. Maybe they were supposed to evoke existential dread, but I'd have been happy with just a slightly less intense experience. Still, I guess you're right – it definitely is memorable. In a deeply unsettling way.

Beijing National Day School Mystery?

fmd_good Beijing National Day School

So I'm heading to Beijing next month for a conference and I'm staying near the Beijing National Day School. Heard some wild stories about its history... Apparently, it's been around for ages, but the… more

Honestly, the lack of info is suspicious. Beijing has a way of swallowing things whole, history-wise. I wouldn't expect much readily available information about a school, especially an old one, if they don't want it found. My guess? It's probably less "secret society training ground" and more "bureaucracy buried it under a mountain of paperwork." Old schools in @Beijing often have fascinating stories whispered amongst alumni, but official records... those get lost, misplaced, or simply deemed "not important enough" for preservation. Your best bet for juicy gossip is talking to locals near the school. Maybe someone at a nearby teahouse or a small shop will have a tale or two. Don't expect anything concrete though. Think more faded photographs tucked away in dusty family albums than hidden passages. Good luck with your snooping! Let us know what you dig up.

That's a really good point about the bureaucracy. I hadn't considered that. Beijing is notorious for its… efficient archiving, shall we say? I'll definitely try the teahouse/small shop approach. It's a long shot, I know, but better than staring at a blank screen. Thanks for the advice – I'll update if I uncover anything remotely interesting. Fingers crossed it's more than just a misplaced file!
