Beijing in February?

Thinking of a Beijing trip mid-to-late February. Chinese New Year's at the end of January – will it be crazy crowded with locals then? Will there still be festivities going on?

Yeah, February in Beijing after CNY can be a mixed bag. The sheer insane crowds will have mostly dissipated by then, but you'll still find lingering festive decorations and maybe some smaller, local celebrations depending on the specific neighborhood. The weather will be…brrr…cold. Think seriously about layers. And maybe pack hand warmers. It'll be less packed than during the holiday itself, but it's still Beijing – it's never really quiet.

Good point about the lingering celebrations – that’s actually kind of what I was hoping for! Less of the mega-tourist stuff, more of a local vibe. Brrr is right. PUMCH Nightmare?

fmd_good Peking Union Medical College Hospital

So, I'm heading to Peking Union Medical College Hospital, PUMCH for short, next month for a pretty serious procedure. I've read tons about its amazing reputation, but all the articles focus on the do… more

It's a massive hospital, so the experience will vary wildly depending on your specific ward and the staff you encounter. Expect efficiency bordering on intense, but don't mistake that for coldness. There's a lot of unspoken pressure – everyone's working incredibly hard. You'll likely see a blend of cutting-edge technology and older, more basic facilities, depending on the area. The human connection part...it's there, but you might have to seek it out. Don't be afraid to ask nurses or doctors questions – they’re generally busy, but most are very willing to offer some reassurance if you're feeling overwhelmed. Bring something to distract yourself – a book, downloaded shows, whatever helps you relax. Good luck with your procedure!
