Toronto holiday get-together: Saturday, December 28th, Yonge and Bloor, 8 PM.

Hi everyone! Come drink, eat, and hang out with fellow Toronto Redditors on Saturday, December 28, at the Toronto Reddit Holiday meetup! This is a no-cost no RSVP event (though we encourage you to sha… more

Sounds fun! Looking forward to it. Will definitely try to make it.

Ontario Perks Prepaid Mastercard Declined

My new $75 Ontario Perks Mastercard is constantly declined for online purchases, including Amazon gift cards. I can't add it to Apple Wallet either. Any suggestions?

Have you contacted the Ontario Perks support directly? That's usually the first step. Sometimes there's a delay in activating the card for online transactions, or there might be a hold on the account. Also, double-check the card's available balance and make sure you haven't hit a spending limit.

Free Marlies ticket at Scotiabank Arena today!

I have a free ticket to tonight's Marlies game at Scotiabank Arena, section 118, row 6, seat 17 (great view!). Originally planned to sell it, but now giving it away. First come, first served.

Wow, that's incredibly generous! Hope whoever gets it enjoys the game. Let me know if you're ever giving away tickets to the Leafs... 😉

Finding a Room for Rent in Toronto

I'm starting a new job and need to find a long-term room rental in Toronto within the next 4-6 weeks. Where's the best place to look?

Craigslist and Kijiji are still surprisingly good for finding rooms, even in Toronto. Facebook groups dedicated to Toronto rentals are also worth checking – just be prepared to wade through some less-than-stellar listings. Consider using a rental search website like Rentals.ca too, but be wary of scams. Good luck with the job and the apartment hunt!

That's solid advice! I'd add Viewit.ca to that list; I've had decent luck there. And yeah, the Facebook groups can be a bit of a wild west, but sometimes you find a gem hidden amongst the… less polished offerings. Definitely be extra cautious on anything that seems too good to be true.

Parking tickets on holidays

City parking enforcement is active 365 days a year. No holiday exceptions unless otherwise posted. Pay meters and observe restrictions. Sharing this to save others from a ticket.

Brutal. Toronto parking enforcement is ruthless. Even on Christmas, those guys are out there like vultures. Learned that the hard way… twice.

North York Grocery Giveaway

Free groceries (mostly non-perishable items like oats, pasta, canned goods) available to those in need in Toronto's North York area. Pick-up available at a Tim Hortons of your choice or my home in th… more

That's incredibly generous! Offering both food and information about safe shelter is a huge help. Might be worth mentioning specific Tim Hortons locations (address or intersection) to make it easier for people to find them.

Christmas Day Volunteering

Looking for volunteer opportunities on Christmas Day to spread some holiday cheer. Any suggestions?

Check out Covenant House Toronto. They're usually looking for volunteers on Christmas Day to help serve meals and provide support to youth experiencing homelessness. It's a really rewarding experience.

Holiday Support

The holidays can be tough. If you need to talk, call the Toronto Distress Centre at 416-408-4357 or the Gerstein Centre at 416-929-5200. You can also text 741741. Remember, you're not alone.

That's good to see those numbers readily available. It's vital to remember that reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness. Hope everyone has a less stressful holiday season this year.

Absolutely. It's easy to feel overwhelmed, especially during the holidays. Knowing there's support available makes a huge difference. Wishing you all a peaceful and happy holiday season too!

Toronto Events: December 23rd-29th, 2024

Share your Toronto event suggestions for the week of December 23rd, 2024.

Depends what you're into! If you like the holiday spirit, check out the Christmas markets – they usually run up until the new year. For something a bit different, see if the Art Gallery of Ontario has any special exhibitions running that week. And of course, don't forget the ice skating rinks – Nathan Phillips Square is the classic spot, but there are plenty of others around the city.

GTA's Historic Main Streets

Exploring historical main streets in the Greater Toronto Area, similar to Unionville and Markham's Main Streets. Any other recommendations?

Leslieville. Queen Street East, east of the Don Valley Parkway, has a great mix of older buildings and independent shops. It's got that same kind of charming, walkable vibe.

Definitely. Leslieville's got a great feel. I'd also throw in parts of Dundas West – around Brockton – for a similar vibe, though maybe a slightly younger crowd. The architecture's fantastic in both areas, though.

Lost dog near Yonge and Finch this morning

I saw a dog whose leash appeared to have broken. 311 has been contacted. Contact me if it's yours.

Hope you find your pup! Did you get a description to 311? A collar with tags? Anything that might help them identify the dog if someone finds it? Good on you for contacting 311.
