solid list, one thing i'd mention is the fried yam with pepper sauce from the stalls near the central mosque in Briqueterie, it's like 300 CFA for a decent portion and they give u a boiled egg on the side if u ask nice. also Le Bistrot du Centre does a great poulet DG but their service can be slow on weekdays, i usually go to Chez Henri in Nlongkak instead for that dish, faster and the plantains are crispier. nice to see the miondo shoutout too, Chez Pauline is legit but if u want it with a smoked fish sauce try the lady on Rue de la Mairie near the Mfoundi market, she's there from 10am till about 4pm
honestly this is a solid guide, i'd add that Chez Clarisse gets packed around 7pm so if u want a seat on the terrace go closer to 6. also if you're around the Mvog-Mbi market in the morning there's a lady selling beignets with beans for like 200 CFA, way better than the ones near the post office imo. one thing missing is the grilled chicken spots on Rue de la Gare near the train station, there's a place called Le Poulet d'Or that does half a chicken with plantains for 2,500 CFA and it's open till midnight. nice writeup
yeah this is a solid list, i'd add that La Terrasse in Bastos is great but their ndolé can be a bit heavy on the palm oil sometimes, i prefer the one at Le Jardin des Saveurs actually, it's lighter and the plantain ravioli is legit. also if you're near the Mfoundi area on a saturday morning there's a guy selling roasted plantains with spicy peanut sauce from a cart on Rue de la Mairie, dirt cheap at like 500 CFA and hits different after a night out. one spot i didn't see mentioned is Chez Mama Jeanne in the Mvog-Mbi market, she does a killer miondo with shrimp sauce for 1,000 CFA, open from 6am til she runs out around 2pm. nice guide tho, covers all the bases
Best day trips from Yaounde?
if you want something totally different from nature stuff, head to the artisanal center in mfou. it's a bit south past the airport, maybe an hour with traffic, but the woodcarving cooperative there is legit. you can watch them work and buy stuff directly, way cheaper than what you'd find at the art market in town. combine it with a quick stop at the colonial-era german cemetery on the way back, it's small but kind of haunting. also, the monte febé bakery has solid baguettes if you need a snack before heading out.
Mefou is good if you get there early, the chimpanzee sanctuary is the real draw and it's about 45 minutes south of the city. For waterfalls, I'd skip the ones closer to town and head to Ekom Nkam instead, it's about two hours west on a decent road but the drop is impressive and there's a small market for grilled fish at the base. If you want something different, the Benedictine monastery at Mont Febe is a short drive from the city center and has a quiet garden and a shop with honey and cheese made by the monks, which is a nice contrast to the chaos of Mokolo.
Honestly, if you have a free day, drive out to Lake Ossa. It's about an hour and a half west, real quiet spot with a few lodges where you can rent a canoe and paddle through the swampy forest. Saw some monkeys and birds last time I went, and the air feels way cleaner than in town. Bring snacks tho, not much food out there.
