Do I need a CPF before I can open an account, and which banks actually let foreigners do it without a mountain of paperwork? Also curious what people use for transfers back home, Wise or something else.

Nubank, app only, cpf required

Agree on the CPF being the gate, though it's worth noting the CPF itself can take a few weeks via the Receita Federal or a despachante. Also check that your employer's payroll runs through a bank that accepts a foreign passport alongside the CPF, since some want a resident ID too.

Inter, they take passport plus CPF at the branch

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

App only is the catch, since some employers still want a branch receipt or a signed carta de abertura for payroll setup.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

that branch receipt thing is real, so if ur payroll insists on it open at a bank with actual branches and keep the carta de abertura somewhere safe

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

It does hold, and the carta de abertura is usually the sticking point rather than the receipt. Ask payroll which document exactly they need before you pick a bank, since chasing it after the fact at an agency branch costs you a morning.

Worth adding that once the CPF comes through from the Receita Federal, the account setup itself is pretty quick.

Passport alone gets you a conta salario at some banks tho

CPF first, then download the app.

Yes you need a CPF first, and Wise works fine for sending money home.

Stopping by Sao Paulo next month and Vintage Coffee & Emporium keeps popping up. Is it actually good or just a tourist trap? Any tips on best time to go and what to order?
