Café Floresta on Rua Harmonia does a proper pingado and cheese bread, and mid-afternoon weekdays it's mostly regulars.

good call on the pingado. worth knowing they close early on Sundays, like 1pm, and the whole street goes dead. weekdays after 3 is when you get a table without waiting.

Padaria Bella Paulista, weekdays right at 7am.

Praça Benedito Calixto market, sat mornings only.

I only know that area from a couple of visits, but the café inside Livraria da Vila on Fradique Coutinho is a solid bet if you want somewhere calmer. Mornings before 10 are noticeably quieter than the afternoon rush.

Second this, but weekends it fills up fast.

Saturday mornings after 11 are the worst of it.

yeah the upstairs seating at that bookshop is the quiet part, most people grab their coffee and leave. weekdays around 2pm is dead too, everyone's back at work by then.

Upstairs gets warm by mid-afternoon though, the aircon barely reaches those tables. If you want quiet and cool, aim for right when they open rather than after lunch.

the bookshop cafe works but ngl the coffee itself is just okay, more about the space. if you care about the cup, walk down to Coffee Lab on Fradique Coutinho, they do proper filter and single origin stuff. quieter around opening, before the laptop crowd lands.

Stopping by Sao Paulo next month and Vintage Coffee & Emporium keeps popping up. Is it actually good or just a tourist trap? Any tips on best time to go and what to order?
