Do I need a CPF first, and which banks or digital accounts actually let you get paid and use a card without permanent residency?

Banco do Brasil and Itaú both offer non resident accounts but the process at the branch is slow and requires proof of income, so most people I know just use a fintech for the first few months. PagBank and C6 Bank tend to be more flexible on visa status once your documents are in order. Also keep in mind that a temporary visa gets you a CRNM card eventually, which unlocks better options than the initial protocolo receipt.

PagBank also freezes accounts fast if your protocolo expires before the card arrives, so diarize the renewal

You'll need a CPF before almost anything, and getting one at the Receita Federal is the real bottleneck, not the bank itself. Nubank and Inter will open accounts on a temporary visa once you have the CPF plus a residência address, though Inter sometimes asks for a RNE. Wise works fine for receiving foreign salary without any of that, but it's not a Brazilian bank account.

CPF takes about a week at Poupatempo, not months.

Agree on the bottleneck, but the CPF appointment itself you can book online at gov.br, which saves a wasted trip.

the residência proof is where people get stuck, not the cpf. nubank wants a conta de luz or similar in your name, and a lot of landlords put utilities in their own name, so ask for a declaração de residência from them upfront. wise is fine for salary but you can't pay a boleto or use pix with it, which bites fast here

Best ways to meet people in Sao Paulo 2026

I've he… I'm moving to Sao Paulo in a few months and I'd rather find something recurring than a one-off meetup, like a regular class, sports group or language exchange that actually builds friendships. I've heard places around Vila Madalena and Pinheiros are good for that kind of thing, but I don't know where to start. Any suggestions for someone arriving cold?

honestly the language exchange at Lisbon Bar in Pinheiros on Tuesday nights is a good bet, it draws a regular crowd so you see the same faces weekly. For sport, look up the rugby and ultimate frisbee groups that train around Vila Madalena, they're very welcoming to newcomers. Classes at Sesc Pompeia fill up fast but the capoeira and dance ones build real friendships.
