Any good bar or lanchonete around the square for a cheap beer and a bite at night? Wondering if Bar e Lanchonete Praça da Sé is worth it or if I should walk a few blocks for something better.

The Sé area empties out after dark and gets a bit rough, so I'd walk ten minutes toward Rua Direita and the pedestrian streets off it. There's a cluster of botecos there with cold Original on tap and decent pastéis and bolinhos. Bar e Lanchonete Praça da Sé is fine for a quick chopp but nothing special. Eat earlier rather than late if you're on foot.

Bar Estadão on Rua Major Quedinho instead, pastéis until 2am.

Estadão is a solid call, but the pastel de carne there runs about 12 reais now, so it's not as cheap as it used to be. If you want the same vibe closer, the botecos on Rua do Carmo do a chopp and a bolinho combo for less.

Agreed on eating early, though I'd push toward Rua São Bento rather than Direita, quieter and the bolinhos are fresher before 8.

São Bento makes sense, though the lanchonetes on Rua José Bonifácio near the corner do a decent caldo verde after 9.

Any bars within walking distance or a short ride you'd recommend for a relaxed beer? I'd rather avoid loud clubs.

I've only passed through, but the botecos around Vila Madalena are where you want to be for a relaxed beer. Just wander the side streets off Rua Harmonia and pick whichever one is busy. Skip anything with a cover charge.
