What's the easiest way for a foreigner to open a bank account or get a local card in Sao Paulo in 2026, and do I really need a CPF first?

Bring passport plus CPF receipt to the receita federal first.

receita appointment can take weeks so book online early

worth adding that the passport needs to be the original, not a copy, and they sometimes ask for a proof of address too. a hotel booking near Estanplaza Paulista should work for that if u don't have a lease yet.

Some branches push back on hotel bookings, so ask the hotel for a signed declaração de hospedagem on letterhead instead.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Hotel bookings sometimes get rejected as comprovante de residência, so a declaracao from your hotel or a friend's address is safer.

and the protocol printout, not just the receipt

cpf first yeah, but a digital account like nubank or inter takes you further than fighting a banco do brasil branch on paulista

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Agree, though Inter still asks for a local address

Nubank's app is all in Portuguese though, so factor that in if you don't read it well.

I'm here on a tourist entry and want to extend or switch to a work permit, which one do I actually apply for and what docs trip people up? Also heard the Federal Police appointment in Sao Paulo books out fast, is that true?
