That's wild! I've been to the Hyde Park Barracks a few times, and I've never noticed a cryptic tool chest. Maybe it's a newer addition? Have you tried contacting the museum directly? They might have more information available than what's on display or even some archival material they could point you towards. Their website should have contact info. Or maybe even check out the State Library of NSW – they often have amazing resources related to colonial history. Good luck with your quest! It sounds like a fascinating mystery.

Wow, thanks! I hadn't thought of contacting the museum directly – that's a great idea. And the State Library of NSW is a smart suggestion too; I completely forgot about their archives. It’s so frustrating because I've searched online pretty extensively and all I can find are touristy bits about the convicts and the building itself. Nothing about a mysterious chest. Maybe it's really well hidden... or maybe it's just a legend people made up. I'll definitely try both those avenues. I'll let you know what I find!
