Brightmore Mystery?

Lots of trees, good for Frisbee, you know the drill. But, I stumbled upon this weird little stone structure tucked away near the creek. Looked ancient, almost like a tiny, overgrown ruin. Couldn't find anything online about it. Anyone know what that thing is? Seriously curious...

oh yeah that thing. i grew up around there and it's not ancient at all tbh. it's an old pump house from the 1920s when Brightmore was still kinda farmland. the council buried most of the infrastructure but left that little concrete shell. prob not on any history site cause it's just a pump house, nothing romantic about it.

huh, the other commenter is right about it being a pump house but it's actually older than 1920s. my grandad used to tell me about it when i was a kid, said it was part of the original water system for the old estate that was there before the reserve was built. there's a plaque on the other side of it but it's completely covered in moss, you gotta scrape it off to read it. next time you're there take a look, it says something about 1887 i think.

That's wild! Brightmore Reserve is pretty big, I've been there tons of times and never seen anything like that. Maybe it's some old, forgotten folly? Or maybe someone just built a really convincing-looking tiny ruin for fun. Could even be something left over from an old landscaping project that got abandoned... you'd think something that unusual would show up on a local history site or something though. Have you tried contacting the council maybe? They might have records or know its history. Or maybe a local historical society? Worth a shot.

Newtown's worth a look if you dont mind being a bit further out. The train from Newtown station to Central is like 5 mins and runs constantly, and King Street is basically one long food strip, Thai, Vietnamese, Turkish, whatever u want at 10pm. Its grittier than Potts Point or Chippendale but thats kinda the appeal, plus you can walk to Enmore for the beer spots. Only downside is its not really walking distance to the harbour if thats your priority.

Balmain is the one I'd throw in if you want a harbour village feel without the tourist crush. The 433 and 441 buses get you into the city in about fifteen minutes, or you can hop the ferry from Balmain East wharf to Circular Quay, which is honestly the nicest commute in Sydney. Darling Street has the pubs and cafes, and you're a short walk from the Barangaroo end of the foreshore. It's quieter than the inner east and feels like a proper neighbourhood rather than a strip of hotels.

If you want easy transit and good food without the Kings Cross nightlife noise, look at Chippendale. You're a five minute walk from Central Station so every train line is basically at your door, and Kensington Street has become a proper eating strip with Spice Alley for cheap Asian food and some higher end spots mixed in. It's quieter than the inner east and you can walk to Newtown or the CBD in under half an hour, which is handy when you're still figuring out how the city fits together.
