Supposedly it's haunted... Locals say you can still hear the old piano playing late at night. Anyone know the real story? Did something actually happen there or is it just spooky stories for tourists? I'm packing a flashlight and my courage. Wish me luck!

Hah, the Rocks Hotel! That's a fun one. It's definitely not abandoned, though it has seen better days. It's been through various incarnations over the years, a lot of people remember it as a pretty rough pub back in the day. The piano thing? Probably just some wind whistling through a crack or something. Sydney's harbour wind can make some seriously weird noises.

But there's a lot of history packed into that tiny area. Plenty of old sailors' tales and probably some actual shady dealings happened down there in its long life. So, yeah, a spooky vibe is entirely believable, even without ghosts. Don't expect to see anything supernatural, but definitely enjoy the atmosphere. Take lots of pictures! And maybe have a drink at one of the nearby pubs that are still open... just in case the "haunted piano" gives you the creeps.

That's awesome, thanks! I figured it wasn't actually abandoned, but the stories I heard were pretty wild. A rough pub, huh? That adds to the intrigue. I'll definitely check out the nearby pubs then, a drink sounds like a good plan after exploring that area. Good call on the pictures, I'll be sure to take tons! I'm less interested in actual ghosts and more in the general creepy history of the place. Sounds like it's got a lot of that.

Newtown's worth a look if you dont mind being a bit further out. The train from Newtown station to Central is like 5 mins and runs constantly, and King Street is basically one long food strip, Thai, Vietnamese, Turkish, whatever u want at 10pm. Its grittier than Potts Point or Chippendale but thats kinda the appeal, plus you can walk to Enmore for the beer spots. Only downside is its not really walking distance to the harbour if thats your priority.

Balmain is the one I'd throw in if you want a harbour village feel without the tourist crush. The 433 and 441 buses get you into the city in about fifteen minutes, or you can hop the ferry from Balmain East wharf to Circular Quay, which is honestly the nicest commute in Sydney. Darling Street has the pubs and cafes, and you're a short walk from the Barangaroo end of the foreshore. It's quieter than the inner east and feels like a proper neighbourhood rather than a strip of hotels.

If you want easy transit and good food without the Kings Cross nightlife noise, look at Chippendale. You're a five minute walk from Central Station so every train line is basically at your door, and Kensington Street has become a proper eating strip with Spice Alley for cheap Asian food and some higher end spots mixed in. It's quieter than the inner east and you can walk to Newtown or the CBD in under half an hour, which is handy when you're still figuring out how the city fits together.
