worth checking the date on any carving btw, some of those stone wells out past kurrajong got rebuilt as centenary markers in 1988 and the "ancient" look is just moss on fresh sandstone. my aunt lives off comleroy rd and reckons a few got a plaque on the back face so people walking the old road wouldnt miss em. flip your phone torch on the far side before u decide it's convict era

anyone mentioning the well should also mention the bootleg distillery that ran off that same gully in the 30s, my pop reckoned the stonework got reused after the still got raided. the giveaway is a bit of copper pipe or a rusted hoop still stuck in the mortar if u look close, water wells never had that. the hush u felt is real but it's the ridgeline blocking the westerlies, same reason the old growers up there always planted on the eastern slope

There's a decent chance that well is a memorial rather than a working anything. A few of the older families around Kurrajong and Bowen Mountain put up small stone wells or cairns in the late 1800s to mark where someone drowned or where a child went missing, and they were deliberately left half-hidden so they wouldn't draw crowds. If there's a carved name or a date on the inner lip, that's usually the giveaway. Ask at the Richmond Library local studies room, they hold the Primrose progress association records and those often note who paid for the stonework.

Newtown's worth a look if you dont mind being a bit further out. The train from Newtown station to Central is like 5 mins and runs constantly, and King Street is basically one long food strip, Thai, Vietnamese, Turkish, whatever u want at 10pm. Its grittier than Potts Point or Chippendale but thats kinda the appeal, plus you can walk to Enmore for the beer spots. Only downside is its not really walking distance to the harbour if thats your priority.

Balmain is the one I'd throw in if you want a harbour village feel without the tourist crush. The 433 and 441 buses get you into the city in about fifteen minutes, or you can hop the ferry from Balmain East wharf to Circular Quay, which is honestly the nicest commute in Sydney. Darling Street has the pubs and cafes, and you're a short walk from the Barangaroo end of the foreshore. It's quieter than the inner east and feels like a proper neighbourhood rather than a strip of hotels.

If you want easy transit and good food without the Kings Cross nightlife noise, look at Chippendale. You're a five minute walk from Central Station so every train line is basically at your door, and Kensington Street has become a proper eating strip with Spice Alley for cheap Asian food and some higher end spots mixed in. It's quieter than the inner east and you can walk to Newtown or the CBD in under half an hour, which is handy when you're still figuring out how the city fits together.
