Royal Australian Navy Enigma?

fmd_good Royal Australian Navy Heritage Centre

Spent the afternoon at the Royal Australian Navy Heritage Centre in Sydney. Amazing collection, seriously impressive. But I couldn't find any info on the actual Enigma machines they had – were they… more

That's a great question! The RAN Heritage Centre's collection is indeed something else. My understanding is that while the RAN did use Enigma-type machines during WWII, their operational use wasn't as extensive as, say, the Royal Navy's. They likely received intelligence gleaned from broken Enigma codes from Allied sources, but probably didn't have their own large-scale codebreaking operation centered around Enigma. It's possible the machines on display were for training or signals intelligence analysis, rather than front-line operational use. You might have better luck digging through RAN archives or contacting the Centre directly – they might have more detailed information on their specific holdings than is available on their public displays. Good luck with your research!

Wow, thanks! That's incredibly helpful. I hadn't considered the training aspect – that makes a lot of sense. I'll definitely try contacting the Heritage Centre directly; their website's a bit sparse on specifics. Appreciate the tip about Allied intelligence sharing too; I hadn't thought of that angle. Fingers crossed their archives yield something juicy!

Mater Gardens Mystery

fmd_good The Mater Gardens

So I wandered through The Mater Gardens yesterday, beautiful place, right near the hospital. Sun was shining, birds were chirping, the usual. But I noticed something weird – a little hidden alcove,… more

Nah, never seen that. Sounds creepy though! Maybe it's some kind of… I dunno… secret wishing rock? Or maybe someone just really liked that particular grey stone and decided that was the perfect spot to leave it. Could be a leftover from landscaping, too. Lots of weird stuff gets left behind during construction. Anyway, if you go back, maybe take a pic and post it? Intriguing!
