Darling Point Mystery

Locals call it something else, apparently, something old and a bit... spooky. Anyone know what this secret spot is called and what makes it so mysterious? I'm into exploring off-the-beaten-path places, but I don't wanna end up lost or worse... finding something I shouldn't have. Seriously though, any local insights would be killer!

honestly the Witches Steps thing is real but you're prob looking for the bottle dungeon. it's not a cove, it's this old sandstone cave system under one of the private wharfs near the yacht club. locals call it the rum hole cause smugglers used it back in the day. you gotta climb down these sketchy iron rungs bolted into the rock, only accessible at low tide and even then it's slippery as hell. bring a torch and don't go alone, the tide comes in faster than you'd think

You've gotten some good leads but everyone's skipped the actual name. Locals call it the hangman's shelf, not a cove but a narrow sandstone ledge that runs under the old Darling Point mansion ruins on Mona Road. The story goes a convict overseer was hanged there in the 1830s for killing a prisoner, and his ghost supposedly still paces the ledge at night. You access it through a drainage tunnel that runs under the park, there's a grate that's been pried loose near the tennis courts. Bring a headlamp and watch your step, the tunnel floods after rain and the ledge drops straight into the harbour.

looks like you've got all the spots covered but nobody's mentioned the old caretaker's tunnel under the darling point mansion ruins on mona road. it's not a cove, it's a sandstone passage that runs from the basement of the burnt-out mansion down to a tiny hidden slipway, the owners bricked it up in the 1950s but there's a section where the mortar's crumbled away enough to squeeze through. the mansion burned down in the 1920s and the caretaker supposedly died in the fire, some people say they've seen his lantern light flickering in the basement windows on foggy nights. just go during the day and watch out for the council workers who patrol the ruins every few weeks, they'll kick you out if they catch you poking around the foundation

Newtown's worth a look if you dont mind being a bit further out. The train from Newtown station to Central is like 5 mins and runs constantly, and King Street is basically one long food strip, Thai, Vietnamese, Turkish, whatever u want at 10pm. Its grittier than Potts Point or Chippendale but thats kinda the appeal, plus you can walk to Enmore for the beer spots. Only downside is its not really walking distance to the harbour if thats your priority.

Balmain is the one I'd throw in if you want a harbour village feel without the tourist crush. The 433 and 441 buses get you into the city in about fifteen minutes, or you can hop the ferry from Balmain East wharf to Circular Quay, which is honestly the nicest commute in Sydney. Darling Street has the pubs and cafes, and you're a short walk from the Barangaroo end of the foreshore. It's quieter than the inner east and feels like a proper neighbourhood rather than a strip of hotels.

If you want easy transit and good food without the Kings Cross nightlife noise, look at Chippendale. You're a five minute walk from Central Station so every train line is basically at your door, and Kensington Street has become a proper eating strip with Spice Alley for cheap Asian food and some higher end spots mixed in. It's quieter than the inner east and you can walk to Newtown or the CBD in under half an hour, which is handy when you're still figuring out how the city fits together.
