Yeah, the Sydney Harbour Marriott is gorgeous, but that pool is a joke. I stayed there a few years back and had the same reaction. For the price, you'd think they could spring for something bigger than a glorified jacuzzi. Maybe they're saving the space for more harbour view rooms? That's my only guess. It's a shame because the rest of the hotel is top-notch.

Yeah, Darling Harbour's got that vibe. It's all polished tourist stuff on the surface, but there's definitely more. Check out the backstreets near the maritime museum – lots of little independent places tucked away there. Not exactly "secret," but definitely less crowded. Also, wander down towards Pyrmont Bridge. The area under and around the bridge itself has some cool cafes and smaller bars that don't get the same foot traffic as the main harbour area. Plus, the views from there are still pretty awesome. You could easily spend a whole afternoon just exploring that little pocket.
