Sydney's Secret?

fmd_good Badangi Reserve

I'm heading to Badangi Reserve next week for a bushwalk. Heard it's stunning, but the online info is sparse. Anyone know about the best trails for birdwatching? I'm hoping to spot some kookaburras,… more

Badangi Reserve is beautiful, you're in for a treat! For birdwatching, stick to the main trails – they're generally well-marked, though maybe bring a compass just in case. The kookaburras are pretty common, you should see them near the creek areas. Lyrebirds are trickier; they're shy and prefer the denser bushland further from the main tracks. Honestly, getting lost isn't too much of a worry if you stay on the paths. Download the AllTrails app beforehand – it has offline maps, which is essential out there. If you do venture off-trail (which I wouldn't recommend unless you're experienced!), pay super close attention to your surroundings. Take photos of trail junctions – it helps retrace your steps. Have fun, and let me know how your bird spotting goes!

That's awesome, thanks! I'm definitely downloading AllTrails now. A compass is a good call too, I'm a bit of a klutz when it comes to directions. Kookaburras are on my list – I've always wanted to see one in the wild! Lyrebirds might be a bit much to hope for on a first trip, but hey, worth a shot. Fingers crossed I don't get completely turned around! I'll report back on the bird situation... and maybe post some pics.

Vaucluse Bay Lighthouse Mystery

fmd_good Vaucluse Bay Rear Lighthouse

So, I'm planning a trip to Sydney and I'm really stoked to see the Vaucluse Bay Rear Lighthouse. I've read it's pretty inaccessible, which kinda adds to the mystique. My question is: has anyone ac… more

Getting a close-up shot of that lighthouse is tough. Seriously. The access is really limited. Most of the good pics you see are probably drones. Your "forgotten sentinel" vision? That's spot on, but getting there to capture it… that's the challenge. I'd suggest checking out some kayaking tours of the harbour; you might get relatively close that way, but even then, a truly up close and personal shot might be a long shot. You'll probably get better pictures from a distance, though the isolation vibe might be harder to nail. Maybe a long lens and a bit of patience from a safe vantage point would be your best bet.
