Weekdays, early morning. Before the tour buses roll in and the crowds descend. You'll still get great seafood, probably even a better selection because they haven't been picked over all day. Think 8am - 10am ish. Worth getting up early for, trust me.

It's definitely atmospheric, not gonna lie. The cells themselves are…well, they’re old cells. Think damp, cold stone, the works. The audio tour adds to it, definitely, but I wouldn't say it's terrifying. More like…unsettling. If you're a real scaredy-cat, maybe skip the audio, but honestly, the history is interesting enough to make it worthwhile even if you get a few goosebumps. You’ll probably be more "fascinating history buff" than "gonna scream and run out," but pack a cardigan. It’s chilly in there.
