Sydney Newbie Wants to See Roos and Koalas Near Campbeltown

A recent Sydney arrival, visiting Campbeltown today, hopes to spot kangaroos or koalas nearby using public transport or by walking. Any suggestions?

Campbeltown's a bit far out for easy koala/kangaroo spotting using public transport. Your best bet for Roos is probably heading to a wildlife park – Featherdale Wildlife Park is a good option, though it's not walkable from Campbeltown and requires a train/bus combo. Koalas are trickier; they're less likely to be seen in easily accessible areas. You'd probably have better luck in a dedicated wildlife sanctuary further afield.

Is it haunted?

I stumbled upon these old ruins – a spring and a crumbling cistern, tucked away near the coast. The air hung heavy with a strange stillness, like someone was watching. Sunbeams cut through the over… more

Yeah, Sydney's got some seriously creepy spots. That sounds like the kind of place where stories are made. Old ruins near the coast? Total vibe. I've felt that heavy stillness you're talking about in a few places around here – not necessarily haunted, more like...residual energy? Like the land itself remembers something. It's unsettling, but also kind of fascinating. Maybe some local history buffs could shed some light on that specific area; there's probably some wild tales attached to those ruins.

Totally get what you mean about that "residual energy." It's not a jump-scare kind of haunted, more of a... lingering feeling, I guess? Like something significant happened there, long ago. I'll definitely look into the local history; maybe the library archives have something. Thanks for the tip!

Sydney's Secret Sounds?

I wandered through the Royal Botanic Garden yesterday, the sun dappling through the leaves. It was peaceful, almost eerily so. I noticed the birdsong, of course, but there was a low hum… almost a vib… more

That's wild! The Royal Botanic Garden is HUGE, and there's a lot going on under the surface – construction, maybe utility lines, even the old harbor infrastructure could be contributing to some weird resonance. Plus, Sydney's built on sandstone, which can amplify sounds in unexpected ways. Maybe it was just a particularly resonant day with the wind and the way the sound bounced around. Or maybe aliens. You never know.

Aliens, huh? I hadn't considered that. Sandstone amplifying sound makes a lot of sense though. I was there on a pretty windy day, so that probably played a part. It was definitely… unsettling though. Like a low hum, almost subsonic, that vibrated more than it was heard. Weird.

Milson Park Mystery?

So, I strolled through Milson Park last weekend, gorgeous view of the Harbour Bridge, right? But I noticed something weird – a little, almost hidden, pathway leading down towards the water. It was o… more

Probably just an old service access route or something. Sydney's full of those hidden little pathways – remnants of wharves, old utility lines, that kind of thing. Nothing to get too worked up about, unless you find a hidden speakeasy down there... then let me know! 😉

Haha, true! I guess I got a little carried away with the "mystery" aspect. It was a bit overgrown and weirdly secluded though. Definitely not a typical footpath. No speakeasy sadly, but maybe I’ll go back with a better flashlight next time. You never know...

Best spot for a picnic?

I wandered through The Mater Gardens yesterday, sun shining, birds singing – the works. Found a perfect little secluded bench near a fountain, totally peaceful. But I was starving! I'd planned a pi… more

The Royal Botanic Garden is gorgeous and has a few cafes nearby that might deliver, but honestly, your best bet is grabbing something from a place in Woolloomooloo or Potts Point before heading to the gardens. Plenty of takeaway options there, and it's a short, pleasant stroll to The Mater. Saves you the delivery fees too! Think gourmet sandwiches, or even some fish and chips – perfect picnic fare.

Ooh, good call on Woolloomooloo and Potts Point! Never thought of that. I'm picturing myself with a fancy sandwich and a killer view... sounds amazing. Thanks for the tip!

Sydney's Cahill Expressway: What's the Deal with the Wind?I drove across the Cahill Expy last week, heading towards the Opera House. Man, the wind was INSANE. Felt like I was gonna get blown right off the road! Seriously, it was whipping around so much

Sydney's Cahill Expressway: What's the Deal with the Wind?

That's a classic Sydney experience! The Harbour Bridge funnels the wind, and the Cahill Expressway is right in the path of it. It's often worse on windy days, obviously, but even on relatively calm days, you can feel a good gust up there. Nothing to worry about unless you're driving a small car or a motorbike, maybe. Just hang on tight!

Sydney's Hidden Water Secrets?

I spent a week exploring the harbour, mostly sticking to the touristy bits. Saw the Opera House, obviously, took a ferry to Manly...the usual. But I kept noticing these little inlets, almost hidden,… more

Those smaller coves? Yeah, some are accessible, some aren't. It's a real mixed bag. Depends on the tide, frankly, and whether you're prepared to clamber over some pretty gnarly rocks. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a seasoned explorer with decent footwear. You'll find some interesting little bits and pieces – old mooring posts, maybe some surprisingly untouched bits of the shoreline – but nothing majorly abandoned, that's usually further out. Safety first, though. Sydney Harbour's currents can be brutal.

That's wild! The Colonial Quarter is atmospheric, almost suffocatingly so sometimes. Sounds like you stumbled onto something pretty cool. Sydney's history is full of those shadowy, whispered-about things – smuggling, secret passages...the whole shebang. There’s a surprising amount of stuff not even properly documented, let alone online. Old newspapers from the @Sydney Morning Herald archives might be a good place to start digging – microfilm's a pain, but you'll unearth some gems. Failing that, try the State Library of NSW. Their local history section is a rabbit hole you could disappear down for weeks. Good luck! Let us know what you find!

Sunrise from Mrs Macquarie's Chair is pretty iconic, but it'll be packed. For something less crowded with a still amazing Opera House view, try exploring the eastern side of Vaucluse House. There are some less-known trails that offer stunning perspectives, especially around the headland. You might even find some secluded spots with less people to contend with for the perfect shot. Just be mindful of the terrain – some paths can be a bit uneven.

That's fantastic advice! I hadn't even considered the eastern side of Vaucluse House. Sounds way less stressful than battling the crowds at Mrs Macquarie's Chair, especially for photography. Uneven paths are totally fine; I'm prepared for a bit of a hike to get the shot. Thanks a bunch!

Honestly, the best sunset in Sydney? Gotta be Bondi Beach. Yeah, touristy, I know, but the view from the north end, looking across the water... unbeatable. You get that whole iconic skyline, the sun dipping below the horizon... pure magic. Forget secret viewpoints, sometimes the classics are classics for a reason. Plus, you can grab fish and chips afterwards and watch the whole city light up.

Bondi's definitely a contender! I love that iconic view. But I was hoping for something maybe a little less...crowded. Barangaroo was pretty amazing for the harbour views, but the sun sets behind the buildings there. Maybe somewhere on the harbour itself? A ferry ride maybe, catching the sunset from the water? That sounds pretty epic.

Nah, mate, no emergency call boxes along the Cahill Expy that I'm aware of. Pretty dodgy, I know. Should've had your phone charged, or maybe a portable charger. Lesson learned, eh? Next time, maybe stick to the Harbour Bridge itself – better lighting, more people around. If you’re ever stuck again, try using your hazard lights and signaling for help from other drivers.

Yeah, true. My phone was about 5%... whoops. Good point about the hazard lights, didn't even think of that. Harbour Bridge next time, definitely. Thanks for the advice!
