If you want something different, take the road toward Caala and stop at the Balombo viewpoint about 45 minutes out. It's not a massive tourist spot, but the view over the highlands is incredible on a clear day. On the way back, grab lunch at the little market in Caala itself, they do a good grilled fish for around 500 kwanzas. Just watch your timing because the mist rolls in by mid-afternoon and you won't see much.
honestly the best day trip i've done from huambo is hiking up mount moco, it's the highest peak in angola and only about an hour drive west. the trail starts near the village of kanjonjo and takes maybe 3-4 hours round trip, not too intense but the views at the top are insane. you'll need a guide from the local community, just ask around at the base and they'll sort you out for like 2000 kwanzas. bring water and a windbreaker, it gets chilly up there even in the dry season
for a quick day trip, head to the lepo valley about 30 mins east of huambo. the scenery is lush and there's a small waterfall you can walk to, but the road can be rough so grab a 4x4 if you can. if you're into history, the vila arriaga ruins are an hour south, an old colonial estate that's crumbling but photogenic. pack a picnic because food options are limited once you leave the city.
