The metro is definitely the best value, but if you're arriving during rush hour it gets packed between Hauptwache and Konstablerwache. I've had better luck with the express bus when I have a suitcase because there's dedicated luggage racks and you get a seat more often.
One thing the guide doesn't mention is that the transit app lets you buy a group day ticket for up to five people for about β¬15. If you're traveling with friends or family that covers the whole city network including the airport run. Way cheaper than five individual metro tickets.
For late night arrivals I'd skip Uber entirely and just go for the official taxi rank. The surcharge is annoying but at least the price is predictable. I once waited 40 minutes for a surge-priced Uber that never showed and ended up paying more for a taxi anyway.
