huge +1 on the tuesday morning market hall tip, that's when the good stuff shows up. also check the community board by the main entrance, there's always flyers for popup dinners in people's apartments, usually 20 to 30 euros for a multi course thing with a theme, way more memorable than any restaurant. and if ur into architecture at all, the old tram depot on miller street does free guided tours of the restoration workshop on the first friday of the month, you get to see them fixing up vintage cars that still run on the heritage line, super niche but the volunteers love to talk your ear off. that botanical gardens spiral staircase thing is real by the way, i've done it, just be ready for a tight squeeze at the top
one thing the guide doesnt mention is that the market hall has a hidden upstairs seating area, most people grab food and stand around downstairs but if you go up the stairs near the cheese stall theres a little balcony with tables overlooking the whole hall. great spot to people watch while you eat, and the vendors up there sell stuff thats a bit more experimental, like fermented hot sauces and weird fruit jams. also the metro gets packed around 8am with commuters, if you can wait till 9:30 it's way smoother and you'll actually get a seat for the ride to central park.
honestly the free walking tour is the best starting point, but the 2pm one is way less crowded than the 10am. the guides take different routes too so if you have time do both, the morning one focuses on old town history while the afternoon one digs into the warehouse district and its street art. also that clock tower fee is worth it but go right at 9am before the tour groups roll in, otherwise you're queuing 20 minutes for the lift.
for the botanical gardens, the 3 euros gets you in but the real gem is the orchid house tucked in the back corner, most people miss it cause there's no sign. it's humid as hell in there but the collection is insane, some species I've never seen anywhere else. and if you're there around lunch, grab a sandwich from the little kiosk near the entrance, the roast veg one is 6 euros and honestly better than half the stuff at market hall.
