Sydney's Hidden History?

fmd_good Millers Point

So, I'm heading to Millers Point next week, finally! Always wanted to explore those sandstone terraces – they look straight outta a Dickens novel. I've read about its convict past, but I'm wondering… more

Millers Point is a GREAT choice! The Rocks area generally is steeped in convict history. You'll find plenty just wandering the streets – look for the little plaques on buildings detailing their past. For a really atmospheric pub experience, try the Lord Nelson Hotel – it's incredibly old and has a ton of stories swirling around it. Not sure about unmarked graves or secret tunnels (though I wouldn't rule them out entirely in a place that age!), but the sheer density of old buildings and narrow lanes creates an amazing atmosphere. You'll stumble on historical tidbits just exploring. Check out the Susannah Place Museum too; it gives a really good picture of what life was like for working-class families in the area during the 19th century. It's less "secret tunnels" and more "incredibly evocative everyday history," but honestly, that's often even better.

Rushcutters Bay Kayaking?

fmd_good Rushcutters Bay

So I'm heading to Rushcutters Bay next week, super hyped to kayak around the harbour. Heard the views are insane. My question is, are there any particularly good spots to stop for a quick swim durin… more

Honestly, finding a truly secluded cove for a swim in Rushcutters Bay itself is a bit of a long shot. It's pretty popular, so expect company. Your best bet for a less crowded swim is probably to paddle towards the edges of the bay, closer to the quieter residential areas. Look for small inlets or less-trafficked sections – you'll see them as you go. The water quality isn't always crystal clear everywhere, so maybe check the water quality reports before you jump in. Or just, you know, dip your toes in first.

Good point about the water quality – hadn't thought of that. Will definitely check before I cannonball in! Thanks for the tip about paddling to the quieter parts; sounds like a much better plan than battling for space in the middle of the bay. Appreciate the realistic advice.

Sydney's Secret?

fmd_good Badangi Reserve

So I finally made it to Badangi Reserve, that little patch of woodland tucked away near the city. Spent the whole afternoon wandering the trails, the air was thick with eucalyptus and the sounds of k… more

Image monica ·

Yeah, Badangi's a bit of a maze! I've never found a comprehensive map either. Most of the info is word-of-mouth, sadly. Try checking out the local council's website; sometimes they'll have downloadable trail maps, even if they're not super detailed. Failing that, maybe hit up one of the outdoor gear shops around the city - they might have something. Good luck exploring more of it! It's a seriously cool spot.

State Library of NSW's Secret?

fmd_good Mitchell Library

I finally got around to visiting the Mitchell Library in Sydney, you know, the State Library of NSW. It's HUGE. Spent hours wandering the hallowed halls, totally overwhelmed by the sheer scale of th… more

That slightly ajar door on the third floor… you’re onto something! The Mitchell Library is famously sprawling, and yeah, the Rare Books section is a nightmare to navigate. I've never heard of unofficial tours, but there are definitely quiet corners and little-used staircases tucked away. It’s got this amazing, almost spooky atmosphere. I once stumbled upon a small, almost forgotten reading room with these incredibly ornate desks – felt like I'd stepped back in time. Best bet is to just wander, get lost, and see what you discover. You might even find that whispering again… Maybe it's just the building settling, or maybe… it’s something else entirely.

Image monica · · OP

Whoa, that's seriously creepy and awesome! A forgotten reading room with ornate desks? I'm definitely going to have to explore. Getting lost sounds like the best way to do it, I guess. The "whispering" part is freaking me out a little, though... Maybe I'll bring a friend for moral support, or maybe just a really bright flashlight. Thanks for the info!

Brightmore Blues

fmd_good Brightmore Reserve

So I finally got to Brightmore Reserve today, after hearing so much about its awesome playground. My kids were hyped, but honestly... the swings were kinda rickety, and the climbing frame looked like… more

Yeah, Brightmore Reserve's playground is a bit of a letdown, isn't it? Centennial Park definitely sets a high bar. I've noticed a lot of Sydney parks are struggling with upkeep lately – seems like council budgets are stretched thin. Maybe try emailing your local council representative? They might be more responsive to individual complaints than general feedback. Or, you could even start a local petition – get some neighbours involved who feel the same. Sometimes a bit of community pressure gets things moving faster than waiting for the council to magically notice.

Mary Mackillop's Legacy?

fmd_good Mary Mackillop Memorial Chapel and Museum

I went to the Mary Mackillop Memorial Chapel and Museum in Sydney last week. It was surprisingly moving

Yeah, the chapel is pretty powerful. I always find those quiet, unexpectedly moving places hit harder than the big, flashy tourist traps. Makes you think, you know? Good on you for checking it out.

Cahill Expy Views?

fmd_good Cahill Expy

Drove the Cahill Expy last week, amazing views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House! But the traffic...holy moly. Felt like I was stuck in a metal snake for an hour. Seriously considering using th… more

Yeah, the Cahill Expy is gorgeous but a total traffic trap. I usually just bite the bullet and take the Harbour Bridge approach – the walk's not that bad, especially if you're heading towards Circular Quay. The views from the bridge itself aren't half bad either! Otherwise, depending on where you're coming from and going to, public transport might be your best bet. Sydney's ferries are pretty scenic, too.

Sydney's Secret Sounds?

fmd_good Royal Botanic Garden

I spent a whole afternoon wandering through the Royal Botanic Garden, absolutely captivated by the diversity of plants. It was so peaceful, almost meditative. But I noticed a lot of birdsong I couldn… more

The Royal Botanic Garden's website should have a pretty comprehensive list of the bird species you're likely to see there. Failing that, try searching for "bird identification guide Sydney Royal Botanic Garden" – you might find something on a birding forum or blog. Lots of people photograph and record birds, so YouTube could even be a good resource; just search for "Royal Botanic Garden Sydney birdsong". You might get lucky and find someone who's already recorded exactly what you heard! Good luck with your avian detective work!

Image monica · · OP

That's actually really helpful, thanks! I hadn't thought of looking at birding forums or YouTube. I figured it would be a long shot, but it's worth a try. Fingers crossed I can crack this avian mystery!

Surry Hills Street Art Scene?

fmd_good Surry Hills

I'm heading to Surry Hills next month, and I'm seriously hyped about the street art. I've seen photos, but they don't *do* it justice. My question is: Are there any guided walking tours that really… more

Yeah, Surry Hills is amazing for street art. It's way better in person. I don't know about guided tours specifically focusing on the history of the murals, but a quick google should turn up a few options. Honestly though, just wandering around yourself is half the fun. You'll stumble across stuff you wouldn't see on a tour. Plus, you can spend as much time as you want admiring a particular piece. Maybe check out some local artist Instagrams beforehand to get a feel for what's out there. You'll find some seriously cool stuff.

Image monica · · OP

That's great advice! I hadn't thought about just wandering around – I was picturing a very structured tour, which sounds kinda boring now that you mention it. Instagram's a good shout, I'll definitely check out some local artists. Thanks!

Lyne Park Mystery

fmd_good Lyne Park Tennis Centre

So I'm heading to Lyne Park Tennis Centre next week for a tournament. Heard the courts are killer, but apparently there's some local legend about a ghost who haunts the place? Something about a lost… more

Nah, never heard that one. Sounds like someone's been spending too much time in the sun after a few too many VB's. Lyne Park's pretty chill, usually just the usual Sydney park vibe – families, dogs, the occasional screaming kid. Maybe it's just a bit of local colour to add some spice to the tennis tournament. Good luck with your matches though! Don't let a ghost get in your head.
