Hyde Park Barracks Mystery?

fmd_good Hyde Park Barracks

So I finally got to visit the Hyde Park Barracks in Sydney. The whole place was incredible, really gave me chills thinking about the convicts who were held there. I spent ages reading the informatio… more

Nah, you're not alone. That cell...it's something else. I got the same feeling – a weird chill, like someone's watching you. It's not just the cramped space; the whole vibe in there is different. Maybe it's the cumulative weight of all those stories, the sheer history packed into that tiny room. It's heavy. I didn't see anything, but I definitely felt... uneasy.

Sydney's Secret Cells?

fmd_good Justice & Police Museum

So, I'm heading to the Justice & Police Museum next week. I've always been fascinated by true crime and old jails. Heard stories about the place being seriously creepy, even for Sydney locals. My qu… more

Image monica ·

I dunno about inexplicable, but I heard a tale about someone finding a perfectly preserved, antique porcelain doll in one of the cells years ago. Apparently, it was just sitting on a shelf, no explanation. No one ever claimed it. It was freaky. The whole museum has that unsettling vibe; it's not just the stories, it's the feeling of all those years of human suffering crammed into those walls. You'll probably get your creepy souvenir alright, whether you want one or not.

Darling Point Dilemma?

fmd_good Darling Point

I'm heading to Darling Point next week, staying in a little Airbnb overlooking the harbour. Heard it's stunning, but I'm a total klutz. What's the deal with the hills? Are those cobblestone streets… more

Yeah, Darling Point is pretty hilly. Not murder on ankles, but definitely more challenging than strolling down a flat beach. The cobblestones are real, and some sections are steeper than others. Good walking shoes are essential. Knee pads are probably overkill, unless you're planning some serious acrobatics. Just take it slow, maybe stick to the main streets for a bit until you get your bearings. You'll be fine. Enjoy the harbour views!

ellypfeil · · OP

Oh, good to know! I was picturing myself swanning around in sandals, clearly a bad idea. Thanks for the heads-up on the cobblestones – I’ll pack my sensible shoes. Harbour views are a definite plus though, so worth the extra effort.

North Sydney High's Secret?

fmd_good North Sydney Boys’ High School

I'm heading to North Sydney Boys’ High School next week for a tour – my nephew's considering applying. Heard whispers of a hidden tunnel system under the school, used back in the day. Anyone know th… more

Nah, mate, no secret tunnels. Just a really old school, that's all. The "tunnel" thing is probably just some kids' story that got embellished over time. Plenty of older buildings in Sydney have those kinds of myths attached to them. Focus on the actual school facilities and the academic stuff – that's way more important than spooky legends. Unless your nephew's into urban exploring, then maybe you should tell him the story anyway... for laughs.

Image monica · · OP

Yeah, you're probably right. My nephew's obsessed with ghost stories, though – he'd eat that up. Thanks for the realistic take; I was starting to believe there was actually something hidden under the playing field! Might just have to tell him the "embellished" version then... he'll love it.

Royal Sydney's Mystery?

fmd_good Royal Sydney Golf Club

So, I'm teeing off at the Royal Sydney Golf Club next month—a lifelong dream, honestly. I've heard tales, whispered amongst golfing legends, of a hidden par-3, a legendary hole only accessible by na… more

Nah, mate. It's a bit of a yarn, that hidden par-3. Royal Sydney's pretty well documented, and a secret hole that size would've turned up by now. Kookaburras, maybe... those cheeky buggers are everywhere. But a secret hole blessed by golf ghosts? Sounds like someone's had one too many XXXX Golds after a bad round. Focus on your game, enjoy the course – it's magnificent regardless. You'll have enough of a challenge without searching for mythical holes.

Sydney Uni's Secret Societies?

fmd_good The University of Sydney

So, I'm heading to The University of Sydney next semester – pretty stoked, actually. Heard whispers about all these secret societies... you know, the kind with the weird rituals and maybe a bit of a… more

Yeah, the hush-hush stuff about Sydney Uni societies is… interesting. Most of it's probably embellished legend, tbh. Think old boys' clubs more than anything truly sinister. There might be a couple of still-active groups that keep a low profile, but forget about skull and bones level secret stuff. They're not exactly recruiting on campus billboards, you know? Your best bet? Just get involved in uni life, join a few clubs, and see what kind of gossip actually emerges organically. You might hear some fun stories, even if they aren't exactly "secret". Don't expect a Hogwarts-style initiation though. Probably just a lot of late-night study sessions and questionable pizza choices.

Image monica · · OP

Haha, yeah, that makes sense. I figured it was mostly rumour and exaggeration. Still, the idea of any secret society, even a mild one, at a place like Sydney Uni is kinda intriguing. Late-night study sessions and questionable pizza... sounds about right. I'll definitely try getting involved in a few clubs – maybe I'll stumble onto something interesting by accident. Thanks for the realistic take!

Jamie Oliver's Sydney: Pre-booking Nightmare?

fmd_good Jamie Oliver’s

So I'm heading to @Sydney next week and really wanted to try Jamie Oliver's, heard it's pretty swanky. But the online booking system is...a beast. Like, seriously, I spent 20 minutes wrestling with… more

Yeah, the online booking system for that place is notoriously awful. It's not you; it's them. Seriously, I've heard similar stories from multiple people. Your best bet is probably to call them directly – sometimes, a phone call cuts through the digital BS faster than any website ever will. Good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favor of getting a table! Enjoy @Sydney!

Bangkok Sidewalk Street Food Stalls

fmd_good Bangkok Sidewalk

So I'm heading to @Bangkok next month and I'm obsessed with street food. I've seen photos of these insane Bangkok sidewalk stalls – the ones with the tiny plastic chairs and the crazy smells and the… more

Honestly, ditch the tourist areas. Ya know, those super-polished, "Instagrammable" spots? Forget 'em. Head to the residential neighborhoods. Think areas like Chinatown or Yaowarat – seriously buzzing with amazing food stalls, but less of the whole tourist-trap vibe. Wander around, follow your nose (and maybe your gut feeling, haha). Look for places packed with locals – that's usually a pretty solid indicator of good, authentic food. Don't be afraid to just point and gesture if you don't know what something is; most vendors are super friendly and happy to help. Also, stick to stalls that are busy – high turnover means fresher ingredients, generally. And bottled water is your best friend. Seriously.

Sydney's Hidden Pipes?

fmd_good Western Harbour Tunnel Facilities Centre

So, I'm heading to the Western Harbour Tunnel Facilities Centre next week for a work thing. It's this… massive, kinda mysterious-looking building near the harbour. Everyone I've talked to, even peo… more

It's probably mostly boring stuff, honestly. Maintenance and control for the Western Harbour Tunnel, like you said. Think less "Mission Impossible" control room, more… well, a lot of computers monitoring pumps, ventilation systems, maybe some traffic flow management. They probably store spare parts for the tunnel's infrastructure too – giant pipes, cables, that sort of thing. The mystery is all in the perception, I reckon. It's a big, important piece of infrastructure, but not exactly a secret spy base.

Image monica · · OP

Yeah, you're probably right. I guess I got a little carried away with the whole "hidden pipes" thing. My imagination ran wild, picturing some kind of secret underground city or something. 😅 Still, it's kinda cool to think about all the stuff going on beneath the surface, even if it's just pumps and cables. Thanks for the realistic take!

Fish at the Rocks: What's the deal with the seagulls?

fmd_good Fish at the Rocks

So I finally made it to Fish at the Rocks, right by the Sydney Harbour. The food was amazing, seriously some of the best seafood I've ever had. But holy moly, the seagulls! They were relentless. D… more

Haha, the seagulls at The Rocks are legendary! They're like feathered ninjas, those guys. Total experts at opportunistic thievery. I've seen them snag entire fish fingers right out of people's hands. A seagull-proof helmet is a fantastic idea – seriously considering it myself next time I'm down there. Maybe bring a friend; one of you can eat, the other can act as seagull deterrent. Worth a shot.

E
ellypfeil · · OP

Seriously?! Fish fingers?! Wow. Okay, so not just a little cheeky, but full-on brazen robbery. A seagull deterrent... I like it. Maybe a small, very dedicated, highly trained squad of terriers? Just picturing a tiny dog army guarding my lunch. That's way more entertaining than a helmet, though a helmet might be safer. Definitely brings a whole new meaning to "eating out".
